Senior Emma Bundy netted the game-winning goal in overtime to propel the North Allegheny Tigers to a 3-2 triumph at Pine-Richland on Wednesday night. The goal was the second of the night for the Duquesne University recruit and helped NA secure a season sweep over the rival Rams. Both NA wins over the Rams were by the same score, 3-2.
In a matchup between two top-five ranked teams in Class AAAA, Pine-Richland stunned North Allegheny early with a goal in the 2nd minute to grab an immediate 1-0 lead.
The Rams were able to maintain their lead through the first half but the Tigers tied the game in the second half on a determined effort by Bundy in the 46th minute. On a great individual play, Bundy weaved her way through traffic and beat the PR goalie to even the score at 1-1. The goal was set up on a perfect ball payed to Bundy by senior Ava Ruppersberger.
Junior Sarah Schupanksy set up North Allegheny’s next goal with a terrific pass to Tulasi Syamala for a 2-1 advantage in the 59th minute. The lead was short-lived, however, as Anna Strenzick evened the score just seconds later for Pine-Richland, tying the game at 2-2. The goal was a fortunate break for Pine-Richland as goalie Madison Vukas made a great initial stop but two NA defenders collided on the rebound, taking them out of the play. Strenzick capitalized on the opportunity and tapped in the wide-open rebound.
The Strenzick goal was the last of the night for Pine-Richland. Vukas and the Tigers defense kept the Rams off the scoreboard the rest of the way, setting the stage for Bundy and her overtime heroics.
In the 116th minute, Bundy score the game-winner, assisted by Schupansky, to lift North Allegheny to a 3-2 victory.
With the win, North Allegheny improves to 9-1-1 overall and 7-0 in Section 1-AAAA. Pine-Richland dips to 6-3 overall and 4-3 in the section. The Tigers return to action on Tuesday with a home game against the Shaler Titans at Newman Stadium.
